What is Sufism ? The word “Sufism,” is a translation of the Arabic word tasawwuf, Sufism refers to the action of being sufi or, rather, of striving for spirituality. The major goal of Sufism is to return man to his original purity, to the state in which he was not yet separated from the spiritual world. The relation between Master and disciple is most important part of Sufism. There is a famous qual of sarkar Muhyuddin Ibn-e-Arbi Q.S.A “It is through God that one knows masters, and through masters that one  knows God.” The course of the Path, that is, the  long inward journey leading a man who is the captive of his ego to the potential state of “Universal Man,” certainly includes too many tribulations and  dangers to be accomplished alone. Very early on, shaykhs recommended that aspirants place themselves under the direction of a spiritual guide (murshid). Sarkar Ba-Yazid Bastami Q.S.A said that  “He who does not have a guide, has Satan for  his guide.” “I would not have known my Lord without my Guru”. A well known Indian Sufi Sarkar kabir das has said “Guru Govind dou khade, kake lagoon paay, Balihari Guru aapno, Govind diyo batay.” In simple term the purpose of Sufism is to spread love and awareness in this world. “Sufism is nothing but idolatry, for its purpose is to preserve one’s heart  from all that is not God; but, there is nothing other than God.” – Sarkar Abu Bakr Shibli Q.S.A.
